Marriott international was formed in the year 1993 after the breakup of Marriott corporations in two companies.

In April 1995, Marriott international acquired 49% interest in the Ritz-Carton Hotel Company LLC. Ritz carton at that time was a troubled chain and the profits in their business were decreasing, at that time Marriott international believed that they could help Ritz to gain their business, in the first year Marriott invested $200 million cash to help the company trade but the next year they spent around $331 million and took over Ritz Carton Atlanta.

In 2002 Marriott international began creating world class services in the hotel chain and drifted their focu8s towards the hotel and servicing industry. Marriott sold the Ramada hotels in 2004. Marriott group was the first to take the bold decision of making all their hotels in the Canada and the United States non smoking, this policy includes no smoking in the places like the hotel building, lounges, rooms, employees rooms and restaurants.
